It looks like the Giants are taking this outfield thing
seriously.
On Thursday, San Francisco selected Vanderbilt University
outfielder Bryan Reynolds, a second-round pick the MLB Reporter Chris Haft reports
the club believes is a first-round talent. Friday they snagged another college
outfielder, selecting Samford junior Heath Quinn with the 95th
overall pick.
Not a typo. Samford, not Stanford. That’s in Alabama, as far as you can get from
Palo Alto in every way. But as the Giants have seen, the south seems to
produce some serious players. Bumgarner, Posey – perhaps you’ve heard of those
guys.
It’s hard to rate his defense since it doesn’t seem the outfield
gets a lot of work at Samford – his high in put-out in a game was five (three
times), but rting services had him tabbed as high as number 80 overall so at
least the experts see him as competent and a good value. Of course, that may
have more to do with his stick.
He’s not a little guy , checking in at 6’3’’ and 220 pounds. Quinn (R-R) batted .343
with 21 home runs and a school-record 77 RBIs and was a first-team All-Southern
Conference choice. He wrapped up his three-year Bulldogs career with 44 home
runs, 48 doubles, 168 runs and 181 RBI.
Last summer he participated in the Cape
Cod League (no metal bats), where he ranked third with 14 extra-base hits and
fourth with a .486 SLG.
Quinn was a second team All-American by Baseball America
this past season.
This is the second time Quinn has been selected in the MLB
amateur draft. He was picked in the 12th round by the Cleveland Indians in 2013,
but opted to attend college. Quinn is the second highest draft pick in
Samford's 112-year history. Philip Ervin was selected 27th overall by the
Cincinnati Reds three years ago.
